on the Chinese mainland ranked among the top 20 across 24 different subjects, according to the British Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) university rankings released on February 28, reports thepaper.cn.

The rankings cover over 1,100 universities in 151 countries. Ranks are provided for performance in each of 48 separate subjects such as accounting and finance, art and design, business management, history, law, and medicine. Rankings are based on evaluations by academic authorities, assessments by leading employers regarding graduate employment competitiveness, and an analysis of 22 million publications and 200 million citations from the world's largest academic database Scopus.

In the rankings for 20 different subjects, and Peking University were listed among the top 20 universities. Overall, 104 Chinese universities appeared in the top 500 rankings for each of the 48 subjects a total of 807 times.

"The world is amazed by China's achievement that the number of entering the top 50 rankings for different subjects increased by 143 percent since the nation put forward the Double First-class University Plan in 2015," said Dr. Christina Yan Zhang, the QS director in China.
