Public Critical of Opinions on 'Female Virtuousness'

The Jiujiang Traditional Culture Research Society held a lecture on "" in Jiujiang University (in eastern China's Jiangxi Province) on May 14, 2017. , the lecturer, spoke about "female virtuousness." During her speech, Ding said the best dowry was a woman's virginity.

Ding's opinions caught the public's attention, especially on the Internet. Many netizens and mainstream media outlets criticized her for her opinions. The research society issued a statement on the Internet on May 24; the society explained that Ding had analyzed traditional Chinese "female virtuousness," and that she had stated how a woman should speak and behave in her own way. However, netizens did not accept that statement.

The contents of the female virtuousness lessons, at Fushun Traditional Culture Education School (in northeastern China's Liaoning Province), caused a stir on November 30, 2017. The teacher suggested women should grin and bear the verbal and physical abuse at the hands of their husbands, and added that abused women should not divorce their husbands.

Netizens and some media outlets criticized the teacher for the opinions. Some media outlets also exposed some organizations for having promoted the so-called female virtuousness for profit-making purposes.
