NPC Deputy Calls for More Attention to Special Education

WORLD 2020/12/16 11:16

National People's Congress () deputy Shi Huifen called for more attention and support to education for children with special needs in an interview on March 5.

The annual meeting of the NPC, the country's legislature, opened its first session on Monday at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Shi, a teacher from a special school in Wuchuan Autonomous County in southwest China's Guizhou Province, gave the interview after the opening meeting.

Shi has engaged in special education for 18 years. She said in order to cultivate children's confidence, she often takes them on the bus and encourages them to communicate with others.

Shi stressed that special education is different, with the biggest problem being communication.

The country should pay much attention to how to implement, making sure children have enough ability to live in society.

"Employment is also a problem for those special students," Shi added.

After graduation, students with hearing impairment can participate in such fields as cooking, sculpture and art, while those students with mental impairments face more difficulties.

The whole society should work together to guide those students in finding jobs, which can alleviate the social pressure and families' burdens, Shi concluded.
