China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Wu Haitao has promoted the new achievements of Chinese women at a UN meeting on women recently. Wu also expressed that China is willing to work with other countries to promote gender equality and women's progress.

Speaking at the general debate of the 62nd session of the UN commission on the status of women, Wu said," China's mechanism for gender-related assessment of laws and regulations has further improved. Moreover, a system to ensure equal employment for women has been incorporated into local legislation."

Wu introduced that the proportion of women deputies to the 13thNational People's Congress (NPC) was 24.9%, creating a new record. The women members of the 13th CPPCC National Committee accounted for 20.39%, which was 2.55 percentage points higher than that of the last session.

"The number of  rural women living in poverty has been greatly reduced, and more rural women enjoy basic pension scheme, new rural cooperative medical scheme and other forms of social security benefits," said Wu.

China will actively carry out the Women's Contribution to Achieving Rural Revitalization campaign, improve the competence of rural women, and improve their ability to adapt to the development of productive forces and market competition.

China will continue to work for international communication and cooperation on women's development and increase training and support for women in developing countries.

Wu said that the Chinese delegation welcomed the issue of rural women as a priority theme at this session.

Rural women are an important force in agricultural production and rural development, as well as a major force in resource management, ecological construction, cultural and social development.

Wu stressed that the development of women and girls in rural areas is still facing challenges, and it is necessary for all countries to pay more attention to this issue and take action.

"China is willing to work together with other countries to make unremitting efforts to promote equality between men and women," said Wu.
